AFCS is committed to providing the highest quality service regardless of a client’s ability to pay. We have many different programs available to assist clients in need of a reduced fee. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions or call (920) 437-8256 for more information.
Adoption Support and Counseling Services
Children in adoptive families have unique developmental needs as well as changing thoughts and feelings about what it is like to be adopted. Adoptive parents share the concerns of their children and have their own worries. These unique issues require support from professionals that understand adoption and are sensitive to the needs of all parties in the adoption process across the lifespan. Steve Wille is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an adoptive father who provides counseling services to help families work through these stages. If you or someone you know needs support during and after the adoption process, counseling for adopted teenagers, clinical assessment of adopted children, or counseling for adoptees across the lifespan, AFCS can help. AFCS provides adoption-sensitive individual and family counseling. Learn More. Call (920) 437-8256 or email Steve at .
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT adds the concepts of validation and dialectics to cognitive behavior therapy. It is used to treat eating disorders, substance abuse, depressed and suicidal teenagers, and ongoing depression in the elderly. For more information about DBT and AFCS services utilizing this therapy, please click here. The therapists who practice DBT are Kim Marohl, Heather Grasse and Dawn Vardis.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy
The mind can often heal itself naturally, in the same way as the body does. Much of this natural coping mechanism occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) utilizes this natural process in order to successfully treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Therapist Kathy Mayer is trained to use EMDR. Marriage Prep and Services
AFCS offers relationship services that help couples who are preparing for marriage, who may already be married, who are in cohabitating relationships and couples over the age of 50 in enhancing their commitment to one another. AFCS therapists utilize Prepare/Enrich, which is a reliable, valid, and widely used inventory that helps couples increase partner awareness of both strengths and potential growth areas, prompts discussions concerning issues vital to the relationship, teach valuable communication and conflict resolution skills, and may function as preventative tool to help couples become aware of important issues before they turn into major problems. (Olson, D., 2004. Prepare/Enrich Program, Counselor's Manual, pg.4)
If you are interested in this service, please call (920) 437-8256 to make an appointment. Couples will be asked to attend at least four sessions. The first session the couple will meet together, the second and third sessions each partner will attend individually, and the couple will rejoin for the final session.
MORE Program
In 2008, AFCS and six partner agencies-Bellin Psychiatric Center, Golden House, N.E.W. Community Clinic, New Community Shelter, The House of Hope and St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter-were selected to be the recipient of the US Oil Open Fund for Basic Needs Collaborative Grant. The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation led the selection process for this $300,000 award ($100,00 per year for 3 years). These seven agencies have collaborated to develop the Mental health Outreach Resource Expansion (MORE) Program. The staff travel to each location, thus making it more convenient and accessible for the persons who will be accessing the services, as well as providing continuity of care. Services include mental health counseling, psychiatric assessment and medication management, psycho-education and staff consultation through the dedicated services of a full-time mental health therapist and a half-time Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber. If you would like more information about the services this grant supports, please contact us at (920) 437-8256. Bridget Blean - MORE Program Therapist.
